ARRIVAL IN MAKASSAR

TORAJA COUNTRY

Our driver will pick you up at your hotel at 5:00 AM.

Departure from Ngurah Rai Airport, Denpasar, to Makassar by plane at 7:00 AM and arrival at 8:20 AM.

You will have a minibus with a French-speaking guide.

Departure for Toraja country, taking a road that gives an idea of ​​the diversity of Sulawesi’s settlements. It crosses a flat landscape, the Makassar and Bugis region. There are rice fields and small villages with stilt houses. Then the road reaches the coast, which offers magnificent views of a sea covered in multicolored sails.

Lunch by the sea at the Beach Restaurant in Pare-Pare.

After Pare-Pare, the road begins to wind through the mountains, offering spectacular views of narrow, fertile valleys, where rice terraces stretch as far as the eye can see.

Discover the lush vegetation covering the peaks, creating an impressive contrast with the green valleys.

Lemo : Visit this famous burial site where tombs are carved into cliffs and adorned with Tau Tau funerary statues representing the deceased.

Sanggala : Visit the ancient cemeteries, an emblematic site where babies are buried in tree trunks, a unique ritual for Toraja infants.

Suaya : Visit the royal tombs where the ancient noble families of Toraja are buried. The effigies of the kings and their majestic tombs are an impressive testament to the importance of funeral rites.

Tampang Allo : Explore this cliffside burial site, with its ancient tombs and carved coffins.

Kete Kesu Village : Explore this traditional village with its unique Tongkonan houses. This village is an important center for funeral ceremonies and houses sacred cave tombs.

TORAJA COUNTRY: Palawa

Palawa: Visit this charming Toraja village, where you can admire the Tongkonan, traditional houses with unique architecture, a symbol of Toraja culture. This village is one of the oldest and most well-preserved, offering an authentic glimpse into Toraja life.Lunch at a local restaurant with panoramic views of the Toraja mountains and the surrounding countryside.Sa’dan: Explore this village renowned for its traditional crafts, particularly the production of Toraja fabrics. You will witness hand-weaving demonstrations, with patterns that tell the story and beliefs of these people. Day 5

TORAJA COUNTRY: Village of Marante and NANGGALA

You will travel east of Rantepao to the Marante Village and NANGGAL.Marante : You will be able to observe impressive mortuary relics. The graves of the elders are suspended in the cliffs, with carved wooden coffins and Tau Tau statues.Nanggala : Continue to this traditional village, known for its numerous cliff-top tombs and spectacular funeral ceremonies. You will learn more about how the Toraja honor their dead through grand rituals.Your guide will likely have found a “Tomato” Toraja funeral rite, which he will invite you to participate in. (Warning: I just participated in a funeral rite, sensitive souls should refrain, there are indeed many ox and pig sacrifices and it’s rather bloody)Maruang Village: Discover this peaceful village, where time seems to have stood still. You will meet the inhabitants and observe their traditional way of life.Londa: Visit the sacred caves of Londa, where the Toraja bury their dead in niches carved into the cliff. Breakfast at the hotel,

Departure in a private vehicle with driver to reach the airport.

Along the way, you will make several scenic stops in the magnificent valley of BambaPuang, famous for its breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and rice terraces. This is a great opportunity to admire the natural beauty of Toraja Country one last time and then transfer to the airport.
